Childcarers Explained
Nannies
A nanny can live in or visit your home on a daily basis to care for your children. Nannies are usually qualified child carers with sole charge experience; however some nannies are unqualified but highly experienced. Nannies are responsible for the care and well-being of your children and carry out nursery duties which normally consist of laundering the children's clothes, keeping their rooms tidy and cooking for them. Daily nannies usually work a 10 hour day with two evenings babysitting a week which is paid in addition to their usual wage. The hourly rate for daily nannies in the South West depended on experience and ranges from £6.50 to £10.00 gross per hour
Nannies that live in are paid less than those living out because they are provided with a bedroom, private bathroom and full board. Some nannies have their own self-contained apartments and many are provided with the use of a car. The average wage for a live in nanny in the South West is £200 to £300 gross per week.

A mother's help is commonly employed when a mother has another baby or is ill and needs an extra pair of hands to support them. Mother's help positions are usually for a temporary period. The average wage for a mother's help is £6.50 gross per hour.
